Eyes on our future, the importance of a child’s vision.
Eyes on our future is a college of optometrist campaign to make parents and carers aware of children’s eye health.
Here at Molsom and Associates we already work with local primary schools providing our School Visits programme so Eyes on our future, the importance of a child’s vision is an idea we love. This year Bridget, one of our lens experts, and Rob, one of our Optometrists, along with Sydney bear have visited local Primary schools in the area. They have delivered interactive lessons about our eyes to reception children and Sidney bear has his eyes tested and gets to wear funky glasses! The team also visited children in years 5 and 6 at Spalding Parish School giving an in depth talk on how the eye works! This service is available to any local schools in and around Spalding, please contact Bridget at the practise for more information.
Dr Susan Blakeney FCOptom, clinical Adviser at the College of Optometrists says : Our campaign serves to highlight how important it is for parents to make sure they’re thinking about their child’s sight from an early age – we really want to encourage parents to be more aware of the signs and symptoms to look out for that may indicate a problem. “An eye examination is a simple process and doesn’t take long but it could have a significant impact on your child’s vision. The earlier any problems are picked up, the better they can be treated. Untreated vision problems may manifest themselves as problems with learning; it’s hard to read well if you can’t see properly! Most children will be fine, but if you have specific concerns or there’s a family history of eye problems, such as needing strong glasses in childhood or having a squint or a lazy eye, then visit your local optometrist for a check-up.”
The College has produced an infographic called ‘A short guide to your child’s eyes’ which explains the development of the eye and a video which shows what happens during an eye examination from the perspective of a child called Robert, aged eight.
Children’s eye exams are FREE and children are never too young to have their eyes tested. An eye exam is just as important as a trip to the dentist so why not call us today and book your child in for their eye exam.
