Andy Molsom secures a Silverstone win.
First Win of the season for Caterham racer Andy Molsom of Molsom & Associates Optometrists at Silverstone GP.
At Silverstone, the Saturday qualifying session went well in changeable conditions. A rapidly drying track meant the last 2 laps dictated the starting order for the weekend, and saw Molsom qualify 2nd and 3rd in class for Saturdays’ and Sundays’ races respectively.
Molsoms’ class – the SuperGraduates started behind the faster cars from the MegaGraduates class, which meant starting 21st and 22nd on the road out of 41 starters for Saturday and Sunday respectively.
Saturdays` race saw Molsom make a blinding start in wet conditions, and momentarily took the lead of his class. Getting backed up at the apex of Copse corner pushed him back to 2nd in class. By the end of the first lap, he was mixing with the faster class in 8th place on the road. Pushing hard in the wet conditions, Molsom finished the race in 2nd place, but had worked his way up to 4th on the road amongst the front runners in the MegaGraduates class.
Sundays’ race was dry, and Molsom again got a good start, and took the lead of his class on the second lap down down Hangar Straight and into Stowe corner. Molsom slowly pulled away from the rest of his class, and spent the race mixed up with the faster class. On the last lap, he had made his way up to fifth, with nearly 8 second lead over his fellow SuperGraduates. Due to lapping other cars, Molsom had the luxury to ease off and watch the MegaGraduates fight for position, but he still won his class by over 4 seconds.
“Starting the season with a win and a 2nd place is a near perfect weekend, the car handled fantastically in both the wet and dry conditions, and is a credit to the preparation by Rockey Racing. Six weeks ago, I didn’t even know if I would make the start of the season, due to a stress fracture of my right ankle, so to come away with these results is fantastic.” said Andy Molsom.
Molsom further stamped his authority on the weekend, by completing the fastest lap in both races.
Andy Molsom says, “It was great to be back on the racetrack again after a long winter. It was a challenging weekend, with changeable conditions and grip levels from lap to lap. Even the wind on Sunday caused some difficulties on the exit of Copse, a sudden gust was enough to push the car wide at the exit.”
Andy leaves Silverstone with an early lead in the Championship, with 14 rounds to go. The next meeting is at Snetterton in Norfolk on the weekend of 7/8th May.
The centrally located independent practice in Hall Place, Spalding, was opened in 1997.
